monitor frequency?
i have a dell latitude c600 with 20gig HDD, 256Mb RAM, P3 1Ghz CPU, BIOS version A23
i am having trouble with a blue screen of death (you can find what ive been doing to try and solve it on the www.tweakxp.com forum - search for a thread that contains 'UniShieldxp.sys' therell be only one and thats mine - my username is TheBlzingAngel, just to make sure you get the correct one) any help would be appreciated.
i am also having trouble installing RedHat Linux 9. i am finding that my hard drive has bad blocks so i will be buying a new hard drive some time in the future, im also having trouble with x server which is the main reason for this thread, i have XFree86 on the case and this is what i have had in the latest email:
You might want to look into your manual to see if this is correct. A
horizontal sync of 48.5 is still too low for many resolutions. You can see
that when X tries your resolutions:
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode "640x480" (hsync out of range)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode "800x600" (hsync out of range)
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)
(WW) R128(0): Mode pool is empty
(EE) R128(0): No valid modes found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
In other words: based on the monitor frequencies you have provided in the
config file X cannot find a mode that would display properly. Now if your
ranges are wider than what your monitor can handle you may damage the monitor
(many modern monitors are protected against that though), so make sure you
get the correct values for your monitor from your manuals or from the
manufacturer.
can you please give me what i need from this - i.e. the correct horizontal sync or what ever
thankx

Can't help you with your Lindows question, but the BSOD is not unusual with failing hard drives in my experience as a technician. I'd be looking for a replacement really fast.

If Linux is finding bad blocks I would expect Windows to be suffering from them too, so hence the blue screens I'd say. Don't muck about with the other problems, fix the disk first.
BTW: I'd expect the refresh rate to be 60 under Linux, but I might be mistaken.

yeh, ive already found out that its to do with lock folder xp 3.2
maybe it has got compatability probs with norton, who knows?
its strange though because it has caused this bsod prob on my laptop but not the pc and yet they both have the same things on them - however i am now experiencing some problems on the pc - i have found norton antivirus to be disabled about four times and it needed to be reinstalled every time - once it said the definitions were corrupt, another time it said on everything that it had been tampered with. also certain setup files on a partition protected with lock folder dont work. i have tried adding new ones and using existing ones and they dont work unless i remove the partition from the list
im going to have to look for an alternative
---
but ive got nearly all my problems sorted now. ive ordered a new hard drive which will sort the bad block prob, i have discovered lock folder to be the cause of the bsod and probably the pc probs too, and im ordering a new battery
the only other prob is finding out the monitor frequency or what ever it says above for the guy i was in contact with in order to get linux working
