new adapter does not charge battery

Hi, I have two laptops: a latitude D600 and an Inspiron E1505. When the power cable on the d600 ceased to function (as apparently is common), I bought a replacement non-dell cable. This cable will power either laptop, but will not charge the battery, whereas the original e1505 cable works fine on either computer. How can I get at least one of the laptops to recognize the new cable and take a charge? On the d600 I get an error on startup about a non-recognized ac source, on the e1505 I get no such message, but the battery still does not take a charge. Advice?

In general, non-Dell adapters will power the system but will not charge the battery - you will need an OEM adapter for charging.

The D600 likely has a faulty power jack, which is usually why the adapter is not recognized.

I agree with ejn - Dell laptops have some sort of intelligence that tells them the type and wattage of the power supply.  Your non-dell power block is not giving the information the laptop wants to insure it's safe to charge the battery and hence, it doesn't.

I think you're going to have to buy a dell branded power supply (check E-bay and on-line vendors - you may be able to get a Dell power supply cheaper than buying direct from Dell).

I'm thinking that either the battery is bad or the hardware in the laptop that handles the charging is broken.

If you have access to another D600 or another Dell laptop that uses the PA-10 or PA-12 power supply, you could try that power supply or stick your battery into another D600 to see if it charges in another laptop.

I'm having the same problem too, my new adaptor is not recognized even though it's from Dell and the same spec.  Now not that my battery will not be charged, also my processor is running at the auto adjusted clock speed to 800mhz, and my normal running processor speed is at 400mhz which is very bugging me.  Tried to flash the bios but the system told me that I need to run under AC supply to do the bios flash though now I am and only can run on the AC supply.  Anyone know how to let this thing learning a new adaptor?  I wish I can find another PA-10 adaptor, but Dell is not as poppular as it is here in Taiwan as back in the US.

Also, my system is always in the safe mode even I'm running in the normal mode, so it won't let me install softwares such as applications and some game.  The error was saying I can't install in safe mode which I'm not in.  I want to solve the adaptor problem first so I can pin-point my problems and solve them one by one.

You may have other issues, but you certainly have a system with a faulty power jack or a faulty mainboard.
