power cord connection

For the past couple of months, I've had to apply tension to the power cord in order for it to make contact with the socket in the back of my inspiron 2200.  Can't make contact anymore and the battery is just about toast.

Is this a cost-effective fixable problem?

Try a new adapter first - at $35 or so it's the cheapest first attempt.

If that doesn't work, and the system board isn't otherwise damaged, you're looking at a $150-200 repair - requires significant soldering expertise to replace the jack.

If the board itself is damaged, you're looking at a $350-400 part plus labor to install it.

Thanks for the help.  I actually used different cords.  The replacement one that I bought a couple of years ago broke – probably from the tension – I then used a connection through a backup battery into a wall outlet, so I guess your ballpark on repair costs answers my question – I don’t think I paid $500 for the computer 3 or 4 years ago – no sense throwing good money after bad.

Thanks again
