problems with the dell precision M4600 Work station

I use Dell M4600 for office purpose as it was said to perform very good by the vendor who sold it. From the Dell site i read that this Work Station has a mimimum of 8 GB ram but on the system roperties it indicates only 3 GB Ram. Please explain why so. I use Windows XP has the operating , is this the reason. And the system seems to as normal as any other general laptop. I use Auto CAD in this laptop but feelis like I'm working on any other normal laptop. I was really expecting a better performance!!!  let me know if there's anything to be done to get this worksation work with a better performance.

In order to use more than that much RAM, you must have a 64-bit operating system.  While there was a 64-bit version of XP, it wasn't widely distributed and driver support for it is very poor - you likely have 32-bit Windows.

Upgrade the system to 64-bit Windows 7 Pro and run XP mode if you must use XP -- it will make a world of difference.
