random cursor jumps and window changes
while typing and steering clear of the touchpad, I'd find myself in another window without clicking on it and sometimes the mouse cursor would disappear for a second then reappear. Anyone else have this and more importantly managed to solve the problem? Thanks.

Sonarcade,
Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
There is a Dell nowledge base article that covers this:
Why does my cursor jump around the page while typing.

Aloha, Bob...
My cursor jumps around when I am nowhere near either the Logitech mouse with the nifty red light or the touchpad. Inasmuch as a I am a writer, this is extremely stressful. I have an approximately 2-month old Inspiron 2650. I am not a happy camper, and have contacted Dell Support by phone (all over the world, apparently), e-mail and have paid a local computer technician nearly $400 so far! The CD/DVD drive had to be replaced. I bought new, but got refurbished back. Tacky.
And the cover to the memory module is warped from the extreme heat, beside all the other problems!
I am not a cappy hamper!
Any advice?
RL

Thanks for the input. However, whenever I try to click on any link in this Forum wherever they appear, I end up at the Main Dell Web Page where they're trying to sell things.
Is there some way to get to answers rather than sales pitches?
I, by the way, have both problems. No help from Dell.

A left click on my links is working fine with me and opens a new window to the correct and inteded pages. I tried it in 2 different browsers. Its working fine.
A right click on my links and selecting [open in new window] is working fine as well.
The link of Dell Mod DELL-BobT is indeed NOT taking me to the desired page. After clicking that link your will have to put some further effort into it in order to get to the intended subject page. You can get there eventually.;-)
The Dell Document mentioned by Dell Mod DELL-BobT basically addresses the following :
-it discusses the following problem :
"When typing, the cursor will jump around the page if you brush against the touch pad or joystick style pointer with your hands."
-and it brings forward the following solution :
"Adjust the sensitivity of the mouse in the Mouse entry in the Device Manager. Drag the Touch Sensitivity towards Heavy Touch and the Palm Check towards Maximum."
Looking at your browsing problems (reading a few of your other posts in relation to your browsing problems) it must be YOUR browser program that is messed up. This can very easily happen. :-(
Wy not try installing a different brand browser for testing purposes. For example install Opera or Netscape and see if it works. Maybe suddenly you are not going to pages where people are trying to sell you stuff. Also, re-install a modern version of Internet Explorer.
PS
I have an Inspiron 8000.

Hi, I have an inspiron 8000.
This notebook has a pointing stick + touchpad.
I WAS experiencing eratic cursor behaviour.
The HARDWARE problem(s) was RESOLVED by Dell under Part Only Warranty as follows:
"The WANDERING OFF BY ITSELF mouse POINTING ARROW problem":
Replacing my apparently faulty palm rest assembly (part number 9C938 A00) with the latest part number 06G500 rev A05 in June 2003 solved the cursor racing over the screen all the way to e.g. the corner of the screen problem.
(I think part 06G500 is for both the i8000 and the i8100.)
"cursor jumping around when typing" aka "erratic mouse self clicking" aka "random cursor jumps" problem:
A few months later,
replacing my apparently faulty keyboard (part number 03609Y rev A00) with the latest part number 03609Y rev A03 in December 2003 solved the unintentional jumping of the active cursor to other parts of the word processor whilst typing problem (aka "ghost clicks" or "cursor jumping" problem).
Cursor works fine now.
IN GENERAL:
-Run the Dell diagnostics and see if a hardware problem is located.
-The pointing stick nub between the g and h keys may be stuck - wiggle it a couple times
-Adjust the sensitivity of the mouse in the Mouse entry in the Device Manager. Drag the Touch Sensitivity towards Heavy Touch and the Palm Check towards Maximum.
-Disable the pointing stick for a few days, if the problem is gone the keyboard may need replacing or cables are not properly connected.
If the problem is not gone the palm rest unit may need replacing or cables are not properly connected.
Contact Dell Tech Support.
I think Dell gives great service.
