standby mode and wireless router

I need help with 2 things.  When I put my computer in standby mode, and later come back to the computer I can't get back onto the computer.  My computer comes on, I can hear it and see the power light is on,  but the screen is black.  (I have an inspiron 1100) why does this happen?  I have to end up holding the power button down and turn the computer right off.  The last time this happened, which was yesterday, the computer was in standby mode for about a half hour, and I couldn't get back on.

Another thing, what is a wireless router?  I have a labtop, and I want to be able to use it anywhere in my house not just where the internet connection is.  Is this what I need to do that?  Does my computer need to have certian things before I can use this router?

A wireless router is a device that sits between your broadband connection and your computers.  Its main function is to share a broadband connection between all computers connected to it by LAN cable or by Wi-Fi (wireless).  For any computer (desktop, notebook, PDA, etc.) to connect wirelessly, it must have a wireless network adapter; this can be internal or external - for notebook this can be connected via PCMCIA or USB interface.

Does your notebook (presumably you were referring to your 1100) come with a wireless network adapter?  If not, you will need to add one to it yourself as well as getting a wireless router.
