start/boot/switch on problems with inspiron 8200

Very frequently my inspiron 8200 does not start the boot process.

I can see from the hardware lights when it will start and when not.
If only the two lights for "power" and "hard disk" turn on, booting will continue as normal.

If in addition the two lights for capslock and numlock get on, the booting process will not start - the screen will remain completely black.

I've suspected the one 256 MB memory to be the culprit, and it seemed to me that removing and reinstalling the memory often times fixes the problem like in a case of a slack joint - but I may err in that, it might be a conicidence.

Once I was able to start the notebook (in one out of ten cases) I run the dell diagnostics tool - but it has found no failure whatsoever in the system.

The problem probably is not related to power management issues since it occurs no matter how I shut down the system.

The system may run in a normal way, I shut it down, then I push the on-button without even moving it - and it does not start (with four lights on) - which is an argument against my loose contact / slack joint theory, though I've been using the inspiron for more than two years now and carried it around a lot.

Anybody has a cue?

It might be your harddrive, I had a similar problem with my 8200. The only way to fix it though would be to buy a new one.

Meanwhile I was able to fix the problem on my own.

I put the memory into slot B (which i did not know was possible) leaving slot A empty - and the symptoms disappeared.

So it was a loose connection in slot A...
