studio 1537 media panel problems

hi there. i am having some issues with my new studio 1537. this is my second studio. the first, a 1535 was replaced by the 1537. both studios have the same problems.

at 1535, the eject - light was on, the dvd-rw was trying to eject, without having a cd in for several times, until it came off and all media panel buttons working correct. some times, the eject -key remained on and no other key worked, or the mute key was on and the pc didn't start windows at all. motherboard and media panel was replaced, but the problem insisted. that' s why dell hellas delivered me a new 1537.

unfortunately, the same problem appeared in it. a technisian came in my place and found out that tha media panel cable wan not properly installed on motherboard. that seemed to be the problem, until next day, when the eject - light appeared again. i reinstalled vista, upgrading to ultimate and solved the problem for about 15 days, when suddenly after "waking up" from sleep mode, the eject - key light on again...

i believe that must be a software problem with media panel or a hardware motherboard problem.... i'm waitin for media panel driver or firmware fix.

any suggestions?

ps: an excuse for my english.

I contacted Dell support yesterday to report the media controls problem and they said i needed to flash the new BIOS upgrade,i told them i had already done that but they insisted i did it again, which i did, everything seemed ok with the controls for a while but now having the problem again, if anything it seems worse, i'm going to get in touch with Dell again on monday and tell them that they are still not working properly.

New Update:

Well guys, I just want to fill you in on my situation so far.  I have done all updates on sofware and bios and all that has been asked by dell.  then they replaced the hinge cover 4 times, then they replaced the motherboard, then the replaced my HD with a completely new OS on it.  After all of this nothing as worked.  They are supposed to call me back and I will be most likely be getting an entirely New Computer from Dell.  So for anyone going through problems I have done all of these with no success.  If anyone knows the real fix please post it.  Also a question do you think this is a good ending with recieving a brand new computer from dell or not?

jcphc8,  You certainly have stuck this out.  I hope you do receive a new one and that it works. The Studios seem to have lots of problems.

Yes, DELL must be aware that there are hundreds, at least, of studios being sold to us with this problem.  it seems from their responses to others that they are still clueless how to repair the mess they have created.  i read a fix on another forum that is supposed to work; i don't understand it all but it's harmless at least and a lot quicker than a phone call to dell.  i'm sure they hope everyone will find a way to deal with this problem, but we as customers deserve more if the company is hoping to remain viable.  please let us all know your success with this one (and also post when dell finally helps us.)  here it is: 1) unplug laptop  2) remove battery  3)  push and hold in power button for 30-40 seconds (which does something or other)  4) replace power; use laptop, cd-rom, and media panel buttons liberally 5) let everyone know if it helps and for how long.   thanks & good wishes to everybody

These Studios are heaveliy advertised. Too bad so many have had so many problems with the Studios.  I had one-had to send it back and I am glad I did. I finally bought another brand which I am testing and if I like it I will be buying 4 more.  So far so good.  Everything works as it should. I have been so disappointed with Dell Products and the forum this past year. For me it was time to move on. After years and years of Dell Computers both at home and in business it was time to move on. I just do not have weeks to do all the troubleshooting with new products, plus the Dell Forums are not as helpful as they were in past years.

I contacted Dell again on Tuesday saying i was still having problems with the Media controls sticking and they sent me a new hinge cover to replace the old one which i recieved this morning, i had to phone Dell up though to talk me through fitting the new one, which in the end was quite easy, anyway everything seems to be working fine now even after a few re-boots. So fingers crossed it has now solved the problem.

Just thought i'd give an update on my status.  I just recieved my new replacement unit yesterday, and crossing my fingers because so far it seems to have no problems.  I had to reset some wires so the Keyboard would sit flush and not wavy but other than that I have not seen the touch sensitive keys mess up once.

I got my laptop 15 days back . Had the stupid problem with eject media button. Also the touchpad is not very responsive. I called DELL and they made me remove the media panel and reset it, did BIOS update, did Factory restore also ( I had to do all my backup again) and finally whats the result?? SAME PROBLEM CONTINUES. The tech guy was really nice and tole me that he is going to write note that I can get replacement or refund and I selected for the later one. After a long arguement with Dell "Return Specialist" I am going to get my FULL REFUND back. I am never ever going to buy studio lineup again.

hi there.. i`m from Ukraine, had the same problem with my 1537 studio laptop, may be my english is not perfect, but i`ll try to explain more with pictures i have made.

the problem is not software\OS.. and can`t be solved  in new BIOS versions,  so don`t waste your time hoping the dell do a miracle )

it`s hardware bug in the media panel`s PCB, so it can be solved only in the revisions of PCB, i think this happens because of bad screening or something wrong with power supply.

i`we tryed to make the screening of the pcb an the interface cable better, but this not helps.

so i decided  to disable the panel for better times. the method i use is wery simple. and leaves indication of HDD BT and Wi-fi  working.

Photobucket
two little screws holding the panel
Photobucket
just pull the panel up, no tools needed

Photobucket

marked contacts, if somebody find out which one is responding to DVD`s eject button, i think this will be better solution then this one.

Photobucket

same connector on panel`s PCB, top view

Photobucket

the solution :emotion-15: just stick the little pieces of tape like shown on this picture, and plug it back. now the panel is fully disconnected, the only indications of hdd wi-fi and BT activity will work.

The source of trouble :) lil chip CY8C204 by cypress.. i found the datasheet and added it to picture, think this can help someone who know`s more in electronics to find out which pin is responding to DVD ejection button, and how to disable it, or something else :)

hope this will help`s  ))

Well after reseating the hinge cover myself the problem did return again, so i contacted Dell again and they picked it up for repair on Tuesday 17th March and I recieved it back today Friday 20th March, they replaced the hinge cover and re-installed the OS and everything seems to be working correctly, so once again fingers crossed. I would like to say i'm very happy with the speed in which it was returned to me.

Hi Phil,

I have the studio 1537 and fixed the speaker problem last week. Its actually a driver problem and extremely easy to fix. Go to control pannel, hardware and sound, then device mananger. Once there go to sound and videogame controlers. Then just uninstall the dell sound driver but leave the vista one which is "High Definition audio Device." THE VOLUME WILL INCREASE DRAMATICALLY AND SOUND CLEARER. It took me all of 5 minutes. Also make sure you check all the boxes that might say "perminantly uninstall" or something of that nature because if you dont check it the driver will just reinstall its self on start up. SUPER EASY FIX, takes 2 minutes, no risk, can always reinstall driver but you will not need to!

It is not a driver issue or a sound level issue. For me it is like someone is holding down the volume up key when the system is turned on. It only happens when you turn on the laptop or wake from sleep. After that it does not happen again. For those that noticed the keyboard bulge and fixed it was it an easy fix to complete?

see adam750 msg Feb 14, 2009, it very easy to fix the bulge.

BTW.  I've been happy as a clam since I disconnected the media panel.  Those that haven't done it don't know what they're missing.   That panel is nothing but a distraction and takes away from productivity even if it worked properly.  No more silly lights and touch pads that I haven't missed for 1 second.

The repair i mentioned in my previous post in the end did not fix the issue. so i contacted Dell and they sent a technician out to my house who replaced the hinge cover, the motherboard and dvd drive and now after 3 days i've had no problems at all with the media panel, so hopefully this is the end of the problem.
