system clock malfunctioning! or is it the CMOS battery??
hello,
first post here!
my laptops', a Dell Latitude D630, system clock is acting wierdly for the past weeks. often does it go back a couple of hours and (for example) i set it to 10PM, it will remain at 10pm for 3 hrs then go back to 9 or 8 pm. usually itl go back 1 day or even years, i had it once go to 2013!
so the time is malfunctioning. ive replaced the CMOS battery around a month ago, it did act normally for a bit then it went crazy.
the time also frezes when i put it on sleep mode so if i closed it at 11pm the very next day when i turn it on it shows 11pm yesturday.
cheers,

Where are you noticing the problem with the incorrect time? Are you looking at the Windows Clock / Calendar or are you talking about the time kept in the BIOS?
I would first suggest checking that you have the correct time zone selected in Windows. Click on the clock icon on the bottom right of the taskbar. Click "Date and time settings". Navigate the screens until you reach Time Zone and make sure that the correct Time Zone is selected.
If the problem continues even though the correct Time Zone is selected, the check to see what time is listed in the BIOS. Start the system while tapping F2. Look for the time and if it is not showing the correct time change it. Then com e back in a couple of hours and see if the BIOS is keeping the correct time. If so keep checking throughout the day. If the BIOS continue to keep the right time then there are no hardware difficulties at all and I can't suggest replacing any parts.
If the BIOS is not keeping the correct time then yes I first suggest replacing the CMOS battery, since the problem continues after doing so and if your Windows settings are correct you may be looking at a problem with the system board.

Zone756,
What operating system are you using? If you have XP and you try the cmos battery and it doesn't work, I may have a solution.

well its not an XP, its a Vista ultimate,
ran the BIOS settings, everything is set the way it should be but even the BIOS time was off, and gets off track easily.

Zone756,
Click on the clock, change date and time settings, change time zone and make sure that's correct.
Then click on change date and time and correct.
Click on Internet time, change settings. It should look like this
Make sure the box is checked and that the server is...
time.nist.gov
Then click update now. If the settings do not keep, then it could be the battery or Vista needs repaired. A Vista repair may take a few hours. CLICK HERE, then scroll down to Here's How:
I had this happen on an XP computer a while back and doing an operating system repair was the only was to get the clock to work correctly.

If you notice that the BIOS continues to lose time, that is not effected by software. So this seems to be a problem with the motherboard. If the BIOS keeps the correct time then certainly follow Ricks suggestion.

I know this is an old thread but it discusses the issue that I am having. I have a D630 and the system clock does not keep time when I shut it off or close the lid. I noticed that in system set up (F2) even though I set the clock and then boot up that it will show correct in Windows and Win is even able to do a sync to the time servers listed, but once I close the lid or turn it off when I boot it back up the clock is off by the amount of time I was gone.
I changed the cmos batt and still the same issue
Do I have a MOBO problem? Any suggestions?
Thanks
