touchpad disable

My laptop: Inspiron 1525.  Operating System: Vista. Trying to disable the touchpad.  I've seen the many directions: "Go to Mouse (by way of Control Panel, or BIOS, or Synaptic).  Click "touchpad" tab. etc."

Problem: When I go to Mouse, no "touchpad" tab appears.   I get a box labelled "Mouse Properties", and the tabs are: Buttons. Pointers.  Pointer Options.  Wheel.  Hardware.  There's no mention of "touchpad".  When I type "touchpad" in "start search", I get "no items match your search".  If I unplug the mouse, makes no difference.

I tried downloading a Synaptic Device Driver, from Dell, which promised to allow me to access touchpad - but after all downloaded, it told me that it was not compatible with my system.

I'd like to disable the touchpad, because if part of my thumb moves over it, the cursor jumps backwards in the text.  I have a wireless mouse - which works fine. I have the touchpad covered with paper and scotch tape but... maybe there's a higher-tech way?

Thanks - Nora.

Try disabling it in the BIOS. Hit DEL key at bootup.

Try TouchFreeze. It's free and works well with Alps pads. It shuts down the pad when you begin typing. If it doesn't do the trick, search for similar programs.
