touchpad/keyboard do not work

dell n1510 - receive error 24

i have run all updates, tried an older driver and re-installed the latest drivers, without success.

unable to test keyboard by pressing f8 at start-up to get to a command prompt. also unable to press f6 to enable keyboard.

in windows mobility center, the 'turn on' button for the touch pad is grayed out.

any advice? is it possible that the keyboard/touch pad connections are not plugged in tightly? i don't want to to open up the laptop unless that is a good option...

thanks for your help!

Hi mel0105,

Please share the operating system installed.

I believe you are referring to Inspiron N5110.

You may also try using a USB keyboard and see if it works. If issue persists, remove the USB keyboard and use an Onscreen keyboard to see if the issue persists with that as well.

To use On screen keyboard:

  • Choose Start/Windows logo → Control Panel → Ease of Access → Ease of Access Center.
  • Click the Start On-Screen Keyboard button.
  • Test out the on-screen keyboard input in any application where you can enter text.
  • Click Options, select the Turn on numeric key pad check box, and then click OK.
  • Open a notepad and try typing on that by clicking on the keys of On screen keyboard.

Note: To use keystroke combinations (such as Ctrl+Z), click the first key (in this case, Ctrl) and then click the second key (Z). You don’t have to hold down the first key as you do with a regular keyboard.

You may also install the touchpad driver and quickset from the links below:

  1. Touchpad driver: http://dell.to/Zt8Mqm
  2. Quickset: http://dell.to/ZpQNgV

Steps to download drivers:

  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is downloaded on the desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Follow the prompts on screen and restart your computer.

You may also run Microsoft Fix it from link:  http://bit.ly/ZatGbI

You may also try reseating the keyboard of computer. You may find detailed information on reseating the keyboard from link:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-15r-n5110_Service%20Manual_en-us.pdf

Please ensure to follow safety instructions mentioned in manual.

Please reply with findings.
