upgrading memory

Hi,
I am new to this forum.

I would like to upgrade my memory.  I have an inspiron 2200 laptop.  When I looked up on memory web sites.  They mentioned I have a 256mb ram, but can go up to 1280mb, but I only have one slot.  Does this mean I have one slot empty or do I have to remove the only memory I have and replace it.  I thought the 256mb was non removable?  I hope I am making some sense.
I guess what I really want to know is does the inspiron 2200 have a slot to upgrade the memory with.  The manual does not specify.

thanks for any input:smileyhappy:

Thanks C3P05,

I have to ask, if I remove the 256mb memory from my hard drive, what happens to all the information I have on it?

thanks ppod:smileysurprised:

Hi ppod
In your manual it show this slot you can replace the ram and use the 1 gig ram in it,s place.
Good Luck
Edit yes it is the same you need to make sure your PC can run 1 gig read the manual real close
to be sure.

thanks,

I know this is going to sound dumb but is the 1024 sodimm the same as the 1gig memory that you buy on the web or is it something different.  And when I buy this does it have it's own slot or do I have to remove something to put it in?

when it comes to taking apart the computer I am completely dumb.

thanks for your patience.

there is 256 hardwired on the board, you can use a 1024MB sodimm to expand in the slot.

thanks Jerry,

Is ram the same as memory?

Sorry for all the questions.  I have been using a computer for awhile and get along well.  but upgrading, well there I have real limitations as you can see.  thanks for all your patience.

Hi
The memory has nothing to do with the hard drive until after you reboot then windows will use the memory then.
It is safe to do the ram upgrade no info will be lost [[but do a backup first to be safe]].

Yes it is. It stands for random access memory.
