wireless connection light indicator

I have a inspiron 1420, I could go online wireless but the light that indicates a wireless connection does not come on, is this normal ? It is the light right next to the wireless switch on the front of the computer I think it should be on. Thanks for response. Ian

From your online manual--"WiFi status light – Turns on when wireless networking is enabled. To enable or disable wireless networking, use the wireless switch." Have you enabled/disabled your wireless connection to your wireless network? Not sure what you mean by "could go on wireless."

Hi, Mary thanks for reply. What I ment by "could go on wireless" is that i can get on to the internet through my wireless router with the computer, so I know the wireless card works. The WiFi status does not turn on when I have wireless internet connection.

Thanks.

Ian

That indicator light is driven by software. There is no driver for it in linux, only in Windows.
Similarly, if your machine has a 3 position spring switch it will only run a "search for wireless networks" in Windows, there is not linux routine for it.
You could add one by capturing the key command and mapping it to a file which will run upon the switch being pressed to the right (assuming it's the same switch as on the XPS line). More trouble than it's worth, I think. But it'd be a good exercise in custom key mapping, if you want to learn how to do that.

Thanks for reply, I found out that the light only comes on when the computer is off and it is switched in position to look for a network, if one is found it stays lit for a while if not it flashes and goes off.
