xps 1530 and bad performances with Vista

Hi,
I've just bought an XPS 1530 ( top of the range).

I am shocked at how bad Vista is.

For a starter, of the 2Gbs of RAM installed, only 500Mb or so are free and available to run user programs.
( I checked with Process Explorer).

Second, there's always a slight delay when typing into text boxes which is very annoying.

Third, the PC seems too hot and fans are kicking in often even when not using any CPU intensive applications.
( I live in London, room temp about 20 C).

Fourth, the disk spins all the time for no particular reason.

Fifth, sometimes the system runs at 20% CPU also for no particular reason.

( I am a techie, I make a living out of developing software for banks so hopefully I know what I am talking about)

I am considering two options.

1. Install XP.
In this case: is the system fully supported on XP?
Will Media Direct and my blue ray disk work?
And the fingerprint reader?
And the 4965 Bluetooth module?

2. Add more RAM and keep Vista.
Can I buy one more Gb of RAM?
Will it fit into my 1530?
Can I add the RAM by myself without loosing my warranty?

Many thanks for your help!

I have 3 gb ram and a 4 gb readyboost [using the built-in card reader and a high capacity sd card]...I'm happy.  Did some video capture, no dropped frames...I'm using the T-7500 processor, that's another factor.

Also, try pruning some of the start-up programs...

Is very easy of understand:

RAM (PC5300): 5,3GB/s
HD (SATA): 150-300 MB/s
USB (2.0): 60MB (Theoretical)

:smileytongue:

I can relate to all the symptoms you describe, especially fans kicking in all the time, hard drive spinning up, delays, etc.

Page 138 & 160 of the XPS manual has some ram upgrade info. for you - DELL memory is covered under the warranty. Since DELL provides upgrade instructions in the manual I don't think they can void the warranty if you do it yourself.

Top of the line system would mean you purchased more than 2 GB of Ram. I purchased 4 and have absolutely no problems with my 1530, in fact I think it is one of the best Dell's I have ever purchased.

Install Vista SP1 -- I did a few days ago, and boot time went from 2 min to 50 sec, and general disk activity dimished considerably. I use ESET antivirus, tried some AVG, Avira, Norton before deciding on ESET for minimum resource usage.

All added, my best ever laptop, blueray reader via HDMI to a Dell 5100 Projector is very, very good.

Consider upgrading to 3 or 4 GB RAM, it makes some difference.
