Annoying mouse - Minor but really aggravating issue!
I find the touchpad extremely annoying, so I use an external mouse on my Inspiron 1300. When a mouse is plugged in, the touchpad is disabled, which is fine. No PS/2 port, so I use a USB mouse. It's a Belkin standard USB optical mouse.
However, the cursor movement with my external mouse is extremely annoying too, as much as the touchpad (Although in a different way, of course). It feels sluggish, or "floaty" if that makes sense. It is like a beat behind my movements. Erratic.
I'm trying to think of a way to describe and explain how this cursor movement is.... it's like the mouse (cursor) is drunk... doing that bit where you are trying NOT to look drunk, so you exaggerate your moooovements and diction ever soooo carefully and goooo sloooow. And subsequently fool no one.
I tried changing the mouse settings. I have tried the Belkin mouse and a Microsoft notebook mouse... both corded, both optical. Would a different mouse or maybe new drivers help? I don't want to buy another mouse and have it behave the same way, but I certainly will if it will resolve the issue.
Thanks for "listening" to my piddly complaints here...............

the best work mouse I have ever owned is a logitech mx1000 (you can catch them on sale for around $40). it's wireless so you do have to charge it occassionally but it's a joy. lots of buttons and a laser (instead of LED) so it will track on almost anything.
I use a logitech g5 for gaming (expensive but I managed to snag mine for $10 on sale). Again, the laser makes for excellent tracking. It's wired (so no battery and no interference issues) but it also has less buttons than the mx1000.

I ditched my fancy mouse pads and just use a very plain cloth one. I think I'll check out that MX-1000; you're the second person who has recommended it to me.

The good news is... It's a laser mouse. It arrived yesterday. The mouse was in clamshell packaging. It looked like difficult clamshell packaging… and was it ever! I attacked it with the scissors and got nowhere. It was doggone near impossible to cut, even with the heavy-duty carpet shears. They oughta make bulletproof vests for cops outa this stuff. I was finally able to cut it open enough that I could get my finger into a place at the top and then pry it open and get my hand in there, and then forcibly drag the mouse and the packing out through the small opening. Good thing that they're too cheap to include a CD in the package.
Speaking of which............ Believe it or not, I actually did something smart… no, really. I got to thinking and decided to go ahead and download a driver for the new mouse from the Logitech website yesterday, just in case the site had a newer version of the software than what came with the mouse. I did it at work in order to use the high-speed connection at work, as it was a 40 MB download. I saved it to a folder on my laptop. Well, as I mentioned, I found out that apparently the good folks at Logitech are now too cheap to include a driver CD with their mice. They have a note on the box and inside with the directions- in a bag the size of a CD sleeve- "To take full advantage of your Logitech mouse features, please download and install software from www.logitech.com/v150". It has a bunch of features that don't work without the software. Too bad if you don't have high-speed internet, I guess. I'm glad I downloaded that driver from work and don't have to do it from home! A 40 MB download on dialup? Puh-leeze! So for once I did the right thing and came out ahead! And so I promptly installed the software.
I am pleased to report that it does not have that aggravating wavering drunken feeling to it, and it does not have that floaty or lagging behind feel either. As a matter of fact, my new laser mouse seems to work pretty good, and I'm pleased!
Thanks, everyone.... and thanks for reading my mouse tail!

while rarer, they also occassionally release firmware updates for the mice themselves.

My only complaint is that it will be several weeks before I get it… do I go back to the annoying touchpad or the annoying mouse?
