Basic Help Installing Memory Upgrade in Inspiron 2200

I have in hand 1G of memory to install in my Inspiron 2200 (which currently has 256). The Dell on-line manual says that I should remove the old memory first. However, when I took off the memory module cover, the place where the memory should go is empty. I see only an empty space with the message DDR1 Only etc. stamped where the new memory should go. I can't see old memory to remove. I am hesitant simply to stick in the new memory without removing the old. (When I did that with my Dimension desk top, the new memory was ineffective. The old had to go before the new would take effect).

Here is my question. Am I ok simply inserting the additional memory in the space that is obviously waiting for it?

My particular Inspiron must be the world's absolute slowest computer, so any help is appreciated.

EJN,

Thanks. Click, and it was installed. The laptop is a little faster now. I wish I had understand CPU and memory before buying it. I would have made different decisions. Actually, I would have made decisions. In any event, I appreciate your advice and will be a happier camper in the future..

Simply install the module, leaving the original RAM in its place under the keyboard.
