You might want to check out this a article: Redmond puts key Vista update on ice, it looks like an update issued last week may cause this on some systems.

I had the same problem.  It has to do something with the AHCI for SATA drives.

Go to dells driver download page and install the Intel-Driver for turbo memory.  You do not need to install the application for turbo memory nor the matrix storage manager (just install the driver)  After that, you should be able to download and install all Vista updates with NO bluescreen.  This worked for me and for my brother who had the same problem.  He has a Inspiron 1520 and I have XPS 1330.

So, did that fix the problem?  Just curious.

If you have done a clean install of windows yourself (and its not the factory default) then you have to make sure you install the HDD SATA drivers before installing the OS. I also had the same problem as you. It is caused by the AHCI drivers. If you want you can disable it in BIOS - change the setting to ATA - and work as normal.

Otherwise you need to reinstall vista and make sure you install drivers BEFORE installing the OS. You get this option at the point where you have to select the drive to install the OS to. You need the drivers downloaded on to a CD or USB stick to install it at this point.

This cleared away my bluescreen problem.
