sorry, but i have a laditude d800 that was given to me by my school. it has a 32mb video card and i was wondering if that can be upgraded. if so, does it need to be sent back to dell or taken to a dell retailer to do? and if so, how high of a card can i get? thanks
I have recently been trying to get Windows Media Center working on my D800. It was shipped with a 4200 Go video card. I spoke to Dell Gold Support last week and they gave me 3 options of video cards for the D800. The GeForce 4 4200 Go, Geforce FX 5200 Go and the GeForce FX 5650 Go. The 4200 has 32 Meg of video ram. The 5650 has 128 Meg.
To answer your question, the video cards CAN be replaced. If you go to Dell Prodcut Support and select your system there is a link to Product Documentation. The doc's for Video Card will give you detailed instructions on changing the video card.
First I called Tech Support and they gave me the part number for the FX 5650 Go (I would give it to you but I dont have it with me, I will post another reply to you in the next few days if I find it). I then called the 800 number and told them the part number and placed the order. I had to do it with a credit card, even though I have an account with Dell. I did get rerouted a gazillion times before reaching someone who could help me. Still dont understand why the first person couldnt fill my order. They said I needed a different department. Anyway, there was one guy I could not understand at all. VERY heavy accent. I hung up and called back. Eventually I got the order placed. THEN.....Dell would call every two weeks to tell me personally that the order was backordered. This happened three times. Finally the card arrived.
Soooooo, after all the hassle I must say that the card works great. Media Center 2005 runs perfectly.
As far as motherboard compatability, there are only three cards that will work with the D800....
nVidia GeForce 4 4200 Go
nVidia GeForce FX Go5200
nVidia GeForce FX Go5650
the latter being the best...
I purchased mine through Dell Spare Parts (1-800-357-3355 extension 7269937). It ended up costing about $200 (American dollars). This was the price about 5 months ago. These cards were scarce when I ordered. Everybody wanted one for obvious reasons.
All three of these cards are VERY good, mind you. I needed the FX series because of Windows Media Center 2005. The only MCE2005 drivers that were (are) available are for FX series cards. I played DX9 designed games on the 4200 Go and had VERY minor refresh problems on games like Tron 2.0 (heavy T and L demand) and Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorrow. The 4200 performed pretty good there.
Another thing to know, my card arrived and it was refurbished. I was a little concerned but I have had ZERO problems with it. On top of that, the packaging and documentation was all Dell original. Nothing to worry about there.
I dont know if it will void the warranty or not, that may depend on your service contract. However, it took about 15 minutes to change. VERY easy.
If you go to <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> you will find the Latitude D800 Service Manual which gives detailed instructions on replacing the card, among other items.
that awesome, i like that i can do it myself. now i just need to find where to buy a 5650. i looked around online and found cards all over the place, but couldn't find any for notebooks. when i called dell they said i could buy from them, but i don't remember the price. is there anywhere else i could buy one? and what's a rough price range? like $250? thanks.

Cards are proprietary - call Dell Spare Parts to order.

Read all previous posts for answers to your questions.
Also, I would not put ANY card in unless it came from Dell. No gaurantee on compatability.
