There is a certain order of installation you must follow after reinstalling an operating system or else usually you will get an error message when you try to install the audio driver.

1. Install the Dell System Software and reboot.

2. Install the Intel Chipset driver and reboot.

3. Install the Conexant audio driver.

But before doing that you ought to upgrade to Service Pack 3, which contains  some software that helps you install a high definition audio driver. High Definition was not included in SP 1 & 2.

so please tell me how to install audio driver for xp sp2.

1. Install the Dell System Software and reboot.

2. Install the Intel Chipset driver and reboot.

3. Install the Conexant audio driver

If that does not work then try this:

1. Open Windows Explorer and go to c:\dell\drivers\R286583 and delete the R286583 folder. That is the Conexant audio driver.
2. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 and get the UAA hotfix. Install it and restart the computer. The hotfix is a patch that helps SP2 deal with HD audio. The patch was incorporated into SP3.
3. Download the Conexant R286583 driver again or re-use the previous download if you still have it..
4. After it finishes extracting the files and begins to install, cancel.
5. Open Device Manager and expand System devices near the bottom. Find the PCI Device entry with a ? next to it. Go to the properties and choose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the driver but do not allow Windows to look for it. Browse to c:\dell\drivers\R286583\WDM, then reboot the laptop.

With any luck it should detect some new hardware and one of them should be the Conexant. If the above does not work, then uninstall the UAA hotfix and follow all steps again, except this time use the older UAA hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221 that some people say works better for them.
