Hi steverr12,

You may try reseating the hard drive and check if it get detected. The hard drive is not a customer replaceable unit and you can reseat it if you are comfortable with disassembling the laptop by following the steps provided in the Service Manual, which can be downloaded from the link below:
http://dell.to/1bBfXQ3

The hard drive has to be replaced if the system fails to boot after reseating it.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Any computer shop can replace the drive.  If you didn't make a set of restore media, you'll need to call Dell for that - there will be a charge for the Windows media.

my problem is exactly the same just 32 days after warrantee. this is the 2nd inspiron in 10 years with hardware failure 1 mnth of warrantee. i gind it bullsh!t that my 1 yr old laptop needs me to pay to repair. i have other brands that are over 7 yrs old and still running. no more dells in the future. a good company would see its only a month out and repair it. but not this greedy dell. buy a new one of othe brand. these guys are greedy and sell shotty hardware.

Since there is no difference between the hard drive in a Dell and any other system, you have an equal probability of seeing a drive fail in your next system -- despite the nameplate change.  There are only three manufacturers of notebook drives left - WD, Seagate and Toshiba -- and all of them are used by all system manufacturers.

i could care less. only 3 manufacturers but many differences in quality depending on how much dell is paying. each manufacturer has a top and bottom of line products and many have product lines outsourced to flighty partner parts dealers. there are a million reasons a device can have workmanship/quality issues from any producer. most know the questionable product lines and sell to assemblers for cheap deals to unload. just stand by you chinssy products. i should not have to buy a powerbook to have it last more than 12 months. ive spent less on portable workstations for my firm for less than this dell and guess what? after 7 years they still function physically. the inspiron n4110 is not better than a free cell phone.  which one does dell buy? 1 month put of warrantee when i see many others have same shot hdd? sounds like a defect not just coincidence. i, like most every american, have 3 different brands of laptops and dell always has hardware issues in my years of dealing with their equipment at home and in business. not honoring a hardware defect the many of their customers are having with same product is shameful.

if are savy you know it is very uncommon for a knowledgable user to destroy or otherwise to destroy a hdd yet the unit shows absolutely no signs of misuse and very little wear. Also, still has plastic sheeting on keyboard and cover. the issue is customer support for an almost new unit.

get it or am i going to get another lecture/lesson from a dell enthusiast or employee?

Hard drives are hard drives - they're not made to OEM spec.  About 5% fail in the first year - more in subsequent years.  One errant shock can cascade into a drive failure - with any system.

If that is the case, without being jolted or physically abused (which is typical of you to accuse since your immediate response to one having workmanship issues is to nag the forum about how it is not poor poor Dells fault their product has a history here with hdd failures within an unrealistic short period), then Dell should replace it. You are clearly stating that the drive failure is a manufacturing defect at about 5% fate for WD.

Again troller, if you are correct, the dell should get off their tail and replace the drive.

On another note, do you actually have an inspiron with hdd issues or are you just here to lecture/annoy customers looking for support to thier defective Dell products, or are you a Dell employee doing D.C. where customers have had enough runaround with Dell support and rant in irritation to fellow screwed Dell customers? Either way, I could give a sh!t what you think of how hard

drives are made and distributed, where Dell buys them, where you were last night, why you have a hard on for Dell, why you chose to follow people around the support site and hound them into not getting Dell to own up and fix their cheap unreliable hardware, or anything you have to type unless you are a Dell employee and are going to send me a working drive like they were supposed toinclude in the box at the time of purchase! If you aren't and can't, well then I wish I could say it's been a pleasure, but...

Dell, just replace your faulty drives already. The profit made off these cheaply produced devices is enough to warrant sending a $65 drive when we see this is a pattern with your product at a rate that proves it is not operator/user error. A rate, coincidentally, that matches peabody's lecture on hard drive manufacturing, and the standard rate of defects in a batch.

Replace it. Do it. You know you can and want to. Just go ahead and do it. Send a replacement (to the defective ones you sold as new).
