Dell Precision m6500 laptop

Hi there,

Hope everyone who reads this is well and headed towards great!

I have a m6500, real nice mobile workstation, and the front latch mechanism broke.  The device that one pushes to release display so it can hinge up, the latch push button on the front.

That particular device doesn't seem to be in the service manual.  A small round pin or roller fell out and the button pushes in without doing anything with the catches.  Actually I think the button's native state is to hold the display down, as it is not locked in now.

Anyone know what is needed to get to the latch mechanism to replace or repair it? Perhaps someone else has had the same issue.  I hope the entire innards do not need replaced, and hopefully the latch can be replaced by itself without replacing the entire base body.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions or general process concept would be appreciated.

Hope everyone has a super weekend

thank, Joe

Hello Roshan L,

Thanks for you info, however I found some latches from a 3rd party vendor who took them out of unusable bottom bases.  Thanks again, good day

Hi Joe93a,

The LCD Lid Release latch is part of the bottom case assembly and I am afraid the whole bottom case needs to be replaced as the latch itself cannot be purchased separately(unless you're able to fix the latch).

Below is a picture of bottom case with the LCD Lid release latch:

If your system is covered under warranty I may be able to help you get the bottom case replaced.

Please private message me your system Service Tag number. To private message click on my user name and click start conversation.

I will check your system details and get back to you with repair options.

Thank You

Hi there Roshan L

My M6500 screen latch has just died and... after taking the battery out I found a spring...

My question is one of customer support really because the 3 year warranty on my laptop ran out in October 2013 having never made a single claim and now this. :emotion-6:

Could / Would Dell fix this for me?

It seems bonkers to buy a new laptop because of this and it also seems to be a pretty common problem?

What do you think and what should I do?

Hi,

Exact same situation for me. Any guideline for placing this tiny spring back into place?

I had this problem too. Turns out that the entire push-in assembly was bust (spring leg snapped).

This assembly should consist of the button with the two securing hooks, and on one side a bit to hold it in while the other side and two bits that stick out. The spring goes around the lower of the two bits that sticks out (furthest away from the securing hook).

For me I had to purchase a new assembly - here is a site with an image for you to compare yours and also to buy if yours is broken.

Thanks for that SIDUPAC. I'll take a look now.

I've had this issue on two seperate m6500s.  The latch mechanism broke in exactly the same way on both machines (pin broke off, spring fell out).  I was able to stuff a small piece of latex tubing between the latch button and the base of the computer to retain functionality of the latch.  Between this and the black screen issue so common with this model, Dell really needs to step up and take care of their customers.
