Dell XPS 17 L702X 3D - Memory Upgrade
Hey all, I'm planning on upgrading the memory of my system in the future and was looking for some guidance on what will work. My laptop has 4 memory slots, currently 2 are occupied - 1x 2GB + 1x 4GB (6GB total). My manual that came with the laptop tells me my maximum memory capability is 16GB (4x 4GB). The manual also stipulates the compatible memory type is DDR3 1066MHz / 1333MHz. I'm unsure of what 4GB memory is already installed and understand compatibility with other 4GB memory sticks is dependant on this, so if you're aware of what this model has, please inform me.
Most importantly, could you recommend the best solution to achieve 16GB on this system described above, that is also cost affective if possible. Thank you for your time!

No problem - KTD-spec RAM is Dell-tested and guaranteed compatible.

First thing to do is verify that your system does have the four memory sockets. Just being the 3D version does not mean that it does - the vast majority of these shipped with two sockets unless the system was ordered from the factory with 16G of RAM.
The memory sockets, whether 2 or 4 are all under the base cover so it's an easy thing to check. If there are only two sockets, 8G is the max; if 4, 16 G. If you do have four sockets, you can replace the 2 with a four and add two more. If it's only two, replace the 2 with a 4 and you're done.
If you have an i5 CPU, the RAM runs at 1066 MHz. If an i7, it's 1333. It's generally safe to run 1333 with either (the RAM will simply downclock).

I'm sorry but I don't believe you read my post correctly, but please don't take offence. It does have 4 slots, and currently has a 2GB and 4GB installed, making 6GB, not 8GB. The manual has stipulated the maximum memory is 16GB, so 4x 4GB (Meaning I'd need 3 more to make 16GB, removing the 2GB). I often quote that it is the 3D version because I forget what processor it has, and it's another way of identifying the model. It is definitely an i7 however, so I'll definitely be looking for 1333MHz. Thanks for that info, definitely helps in choosing. What manufactorer would you recommend? I saw 4GB Kingston DDR3 1333MHz on Amazon for £18.

Would either of these be suitable for my model? Cheers for your input.

Go for better RAM -- "value" RAM is not of consistent quality.

So the KTD one posted above would be perfect for it? I feel I can trust Kingston, so I'd prefer to go with them, and the KTD actually turns out being cheaper which is a surprise. I'm pretty sure it has 4 slots but I'll double check when I get it back later. Thanks for all your help by the way, really appreciate it.

Just found this actually when searching directly through Kingston's computer model search. What do you reckon?

ValueRAM has a bad track record particularly with brand-name systems. If you want Kingston RAM, look for their "KTD" line.
As above, carefully verify you do have the four RAM sockets by visual inspection before ordering. The presence of a 3D video systems does not ensure that's what you have.

What if I get 4 of the Kingston ValueRam sticks? All I've read online is that they can't be overclocked, which isn't an issue given that I have not messed with my laptop. Plus Kingston offers a lifetime warranty on RAM, so if it's ***, I can/ should be able to get a replacement. Apparently this ram is just ram that couldn't reach the hyperx quality, but I'm not a techy so not too clued up on that. I'm really struggling to find any other ram that is reasonably priced and compatible.
