E1705 Battery won't charge

My battery for my Inspiron E1705 wont charge. The laptop can work when plugged in with the charger, its just the battery won't save any of it. Is there a way to fix it without buying another one?

Is the battery showing a flashing red LED?

If so, it needs to be replaced. If not, the problem is more likely with the charger or, even more likely, with the mainboard.

Very interesting.  I have the same problem with my battery not charging on my E1705.  This just started recently (past couple of days).  I am down to 7% on the battery (the laptop recognizes it) and the battery won't charge at all when on AC power.

Any solutions for this other than buying a new battery?  This battery is only about 18 months old.  It was a replacement battery sent to me by DELL when the original battery was deemed defective (due to battery fires) and was recalled.

If it's just the power jack, locate a shop that can do true repairs - i.e., soldering. The rate for a jack replacement should run $150 or so.

Dell (and most other "repair" places like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) will simply replace the system board - cost for that will run $400-500. You can call the Dell number in your location and ask for out of warranty repairs for a repair price.

ejn,

Can you give us an idea of what exactly would need to be replaced for the battery charger on our E1705 Notebook to begin working again?  I want to take it in to a local repair facility and want to make sure they will be able to make the repair as needed.

Also, can you give us a contact at Dell that can give us an estimate on repairs on our notebooks if we mail them in to them, not sure if my warranty has expired.

I think I figured out the solution, at least for me.

I updated my BIOS from A00 to A09.  I was unable to do this before because my battery was only at 7% charge and you need a minimum of 10% battery charge.  I don't know why but that's the error message I received the 1st time I tried it.  I had to retrieve my extra battery which fortunately still had 55% power left on it and use it temporarily so I could run the bios update.

After updating the BIOS to A09, my battery is currently charging!

Hmm, I ran the A09 BIOS update with my brothers dell battery, but my battery still isnt charging.

Nice! How do you do a BIOS or whatever? What is a BIOS by the way?

Hmmm, you went to http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen and downloaded the new bios for your notebook via Dell and it still didn't work?

Well, in your case, it might be a hard ware problem.  OR it could just be a coincidence that when I updated my BIOS to A09 the connection on the notebook "re-connected" when I put it down and now charges the battery.

Sorry, I can't offer any more help as I don't know much about Dell notebooks.

Thanks, by the way, my battery acually charged, only: 1%. Not charging anymore though.

Well, it's been a few days and now my battery has stopped charging again.

I wonder why when I updated my BIOS my battery started charging and now tonight, it has stopped.

When I reset my BIOS I received an error message when restarting that the AC Adapter was not a "DELL" adapter and my batter would no longer charge up using my current adapter.  Well, it IS a DELL adapter and DELL needs to replace this faulty adapter!
