E6420: Driver detection not available

I just installed Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) on a Latitude E6420 and am trying to get all of the drivers called for in Device Manager.  When I go to the Dell support site and try to detect drivers by service tag I get an error message: Driver detection not available so I'm left with uninstalled drivers for the following:

Broadcom USH

Mass Storage Controller

Network Controller

SM Bus Controller

Unknown Controller.

How do I find the correct drivers for these devices, especially when there are often multiple devices of the same type?

Hi jcavalcante,

SM Bus Controller is related to Chipset. Reinstall the Chipset driver on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the necessary drivers listed under appropriate section onto the system and install it.

Please refer to the Video and document in links below for installing the drivers in correct order. The Video illustrates the order for Windows 7.

If you still find uninstalled drivers then I would like to know the ‘Hardware ID’ of the unknown device. Please follow the steps mentioned below to find the ‘Hardware ID’ in device manager.

  1. Open Device manager.
  2. Right click on the ‘Unknown device’ and select ‘Properties’.
  3. Click on ‘Details’ tab.
  4. Under ‘Property’ there should be drop down.
  5. Please select ‘Hardware IDs’ from the drop down.
  6. Please give us the details you find under values.

Please run the Windows update on the system completely.

Please let me know if this helps.
