EEPROM FAILURE

Hello,   My daughter's Dell Ispiron laptop apparently got a virus.  She thought it was Plaxo, but that does not sound right to me.  At any rate, after reformatting the hard drive, there is a hardware issue.  The error message is similar to one I found online, but not exactly the same.  It reads;  error code 3B00:0788  EEPROM failure detected  Checksum Bottstrap expected 009Fh but read 001Ph   She is sure a virus caused hardware damage, but as far as I can tell, the Bios is the only thing that can be damaged.  She is being told she needs a new hard drive.   I appreciate any help anyone could provide,   Thanks, Pete

Pete, Try removing the hard drive, and see if you still get the same error. If you get the error when the hard drive is removed, then it is not a hard drive problem.
