Hi ThirdLaptop ,

If you have tested the Hard Drive as suggested by ejn63 and confirmed that there is no issue, more likely the installed updates are causing problems during configuration at the start up. A ‘System restore’ to a known good date when the system was working can fix this issue. You can try System Restore from Windows Recovery Console.

Please follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Turn off the system and restart it.
  • During the Dell logo keep tapping the F8 key.
  • The Computer will load to the “Advanced boot options”
  • Please select the option “Repair my computer”
  • Select the Language and Keyboard input accordingly, proceed to next.
  • When prompted enter the username and password, in case there is any. Proceed to next.
  • In the next page please select the option “System Restore”.
  • It will open up the window for System Restore.
  • Please select a restore point from the available list. (Select the date on which the system last worked fine)
  • Proceed to next, click on “OK” when prompted and allow the “System restore” to complete.
  • The system restarts and should now load to windows normally.

For your information, System restore will not delete any personal data; however it will delete any programs, windows updates or any other updates that took place recently. For example, if you are selecting the restore point to be the 15th of August, any programs installed to date after the 15th of August will be removed.

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance on the same.

Thanks & Regards
Swapnajan MC

Run an extended hard drive diagnostic.  F12 at powerup.

Hi there- I've had the same/similar issue on my XPS 8300 for the past few days. It gets to 15% and then says "Reverting changes. Shutting down" and the PC reboots itself and then works fine. When I shut down, it installs the same 8 updates so feel like I'm trapped in a cycle too!

As suggested by ejn63 I ran the F12 diagnostic at powerup- yielded no problems. I also ran the iOLO System Checkup via the Dell website and that found a number of problems including "one or more of your hard drives has signs of corruption". Fortunately, my pc is just within the 12 month warranty so have logged a call with Dell. Will update when I have a fix...
