Graphic Driver Update Problem, Conflict between Dell & Windows Update... Please Help!

Hi everyone,
I have an Inspiron 500m, running on Windows XP Home Edition. My Graphic Card is part of the Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller family. It was working perfectly with a 1400x1050 resolution until Windows Update automatically updated the driver from a 02/2003 version to a 07/2005 version. The resolution was awful and I had to roll back to the previous version. Now the problem is that Windows Update kept installing the driver update, so I had to disable it.
So my question is :
Is there a way of letting Windows Update function without altering the screen resolution or without updating the graphic driver? I tried to download the Intel driver from Dell's Support Website, but the result was the same as with Windows Update.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot! :)

I have just spoken to Dell Support and this is a known issue and Microsoft are working on a patch.  They say that in the meantime download and install the latest drivers from their web site (saying yes when it says that they are an earlier date than the current ones) and then in Control Panel select Automatic Updates and change it to 'Notify me but don't automatically download and install them'.  Until the patch comes out.

They didn't say how we will know when the patch is out, so if you see it, please state it here.

Thanks a bunch for the info.
Let's just hope that the patch will appear before the end of the year... :(

Oh yes and then change my regional settings back to what they were before.

Hi I've found a fix to my Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller updates problems, not sure if it will help you, but might be worth a try.  My problem was that the right click menu for the desktop showed 'Error - Can't find requested string' instead of the links to the Graphic Properties and Options.  Also the Intel Graphics advanced settings were missing from the Display settings so I could not use Extended Desktop in dual screen mode with screen 2 as the primary screen.

I found the fix here: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-021334.htm and the lastest driver Version 14.19.50.4497.

I had to:
1. change my regional settings to English (United States),
2. uninstall Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2 M
3. reboot,
4. say no to plug and play installation of the drivers
5. and then run the downloaded win2k_xp141950.exe file.
6. (turn the Automatic Windows Updates back on)

I like the new Graphics Properties interface and that the hot keys now work too.

Hello,
I did all this, and the result is quite the same: I can only choose between 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels resolution... The only way to have a resolution similar to my previous one (1400x1050) is to switch in "Graphics Options">"Panel Fit" from "Full Screen (No Border)" to "Center Desktop". Then the resolution is perfect... but with a black margin of 5cm all around the new tiny desktop... is there a way to make it full screen, or do I have to go back to my old Intel Graphics Controller version?
Thanks in advance if you can think of a solution!!!

Okay, here is the solution I found, but I'm afraid it might be dangerous for my laptop... I really don't know, please tell me if you any clue...
I've set the Screen Properties so the refreshing rate of the monitor goes from 60Hz to 62Hz (which is supposed not to be allowed by the screen). So now my laptop displays a 1400x1050 pixels resolution again, with Intel Graphics latest driver...
I just hope the computer won't crash because of that...

A quote from: http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/06/25/165762.aspx says: 'Although Windows gives LCD monitors a refresh rate, the value doesn't really mean much.'  So 62Hz should not be a problem.

Windows just updated my drivers again and I got the 'Can't display requested string' again!  So this time I set the regional settings to English (United States), uninstalled Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2 M, rebooted and then went to Windows Update, Custom, and installed their drivers and rebooted. Then I changed the regional settings back to mine.  That has worked, but I won't be certain until I leave it a couple of days for the automatic Windows updates to run.
