Thanks-

I just got the cable and connector in the mail.  The print function works, but I'm unable to scan.  Is there a different driver I have to load?

no driver to install. u have to use winxp to scan. my psc 500 i use microsofts picture it to scan. in the software make sure that u use windows software to scan and not hp software. The model psc 500 scanning software isnt compatible with xp. so u must use windows to scan. im using microsofts picture it  and love it.
scans pictures nicely. Oh 1 more thing. your ocr software wont work. Its for scanning in documents and then have it convert to word doc. like say for instance u want to scan a book with words and u want to change the wording. the hp dont have software to convert it to a document so u can edit it.

I just talked to the HP service desk - said the PSC 500 is not compatible with XP.  Is that true for printing or just for scanning?  Also, where did you find the cable adapter to hook it up to a USB port-my cable only has 25 pins???  Any help out there.

After submitting this thing I re-read the earlier posts and discovered that most of my questions were already answered.  -- the only thing left is to get a little more clarification on the scanner driver work around.  Where did you buy the software that???

true for scanning. xp is ok to print with no problem. make sure u use only winxp for the printer. dont install hp software that came with printer. as for scanning. microsoft picture it sees the 500 printer and i am able to scan with it. i dont have it hooked up usb. is connected to my desktop system. there are adapters out there so that u can hook it up usb way. follow the links through the board.

Ok, I have the cables but the thing still isn't printing.  You mentioned not loading the drivers that it came with since they are not compatable with XP.  What do I use?  Any help is greatly appreciated.
