How do I get OUT of STANDBY?

The subject line says it all.

My Inspiron willingly enters standby when operating on batt. power. The green power light remains illuminated but everything is dead. I cannot find a way to resume work except by rebooting. Is this proper?

Thanks,

Davy

davidlwhitley,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

I usually tap the spacebar a few times, and then wait for a few seconds, and then you can press the power button once and let go(do not hold it in).

I too have had this same problem.  Nothing works except pulling the battery out to shut down the computer and then power up again.  This is a defect without a doubt.  I have updated everything as well!  Please help resolve.  I think it needs a BIOS fix.

Looks like i'm another victim to the STANDBY problem as I am suffering the same headache on my Inspiron 8600. It enters Standby mode, the led glows from feint to bright back to feint etc as normal but upon opening the screen, the led goes to bright and stays brights....As for the Laptop itself......nothing..... I've press the spacebar many times as suggested, pressed the power button, and every other button to no avail....Only way out is to Shutdown by holding down the power button....... Is there still no cure for this fault? patch etc?  or is this a manufacturing fault???? Can anyone shed some light on this...Hope so..........Shame really, (putting it mildly) as otherwise a great lappy.......Manny

I am having the same problem with my 600m. After entering standby, I usually need to power off and power on. It will not wake up.

Well Corey, we haven't had a positive reply other than yours.....and no successful reports using your suggestions. Are there any other avenues toward solving this problem?

I get the same problem quite frequently. I've updated BIOS and drivers without any luck. This is *incredibly* frustrating.

Dell, can you please at least recognise the problem? Even if you're not able to provide a solution at the moment it would be good to hear something.

I have the same issue on my Inspiron 8200. Hear me Dell! I have done all the updates including:

Win XP SP1 + all critical updates.

All driver updates of each and every hardware.

ATI Radeon 9000 firmware update.

System BIOS A11 update.

Still the system won't come out healthy from stand-by mode.

What heppens is that the process named "SYSTEM" consumes all CPU cycles, and the system comes down to its knees.

Thanks

I have an Inspiron 5150 and the ctrl-f8 solution also works for me at times, but very rarely.

I get the same problem on my XPS I have found that sometimes if I hit fn+F8 the screen will come on, doesn't always work though. Other times closing the lid again, and reopening it will fix it. Sorry about the double posts, no idea what happened there.

8600 with the same problem.

Dell e-mail support suggests I reinstall WinXP and then check with an external monitor.....(???)

I can't believe all of us are having the same problem and no one will address it.

I've updated everything under the sun, turned off all of my anti-virus and internet security software.....

I have over 319 days left on my warranty, but no one will help me.

For all of you who are tinkering on the idea of reformatting your laptop and reinstalling the operating system, don't bother, as it does not help. Thought i'd save you the frustration of finding this out yourself.  My system came with XP Home and had the standby fault, I reformatted the HD and installed  XP Pro and still the problem is there.. I have now resorted to deactivating the standby option in the power management section of the windows control panel.

I have been there and done that also!  Reformated, updated, even called Dell tech support (which sent me to India ) 3+ hours later still same conclusions.  DELL WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM.  Make sure each and everyone of us are calling and reporting the problem.  Otherwise Dell will not get a BIOS fix in the works.  Futhermore, until Dell produces a fix, make sure your computers power options properties have been change to: system standby = never, system hibernates = never.  Please do find time to call Dell with your concerns though.

Thanks guys for your imput on this thread......

Dell e-mail support:  Please make sure the suspend switch in the control panel is not pressed down halfway.

Me:  Suspend switch in the control panel?  Is this something new I am unaware of, or do you mean the suspend KEY on the KEYBOARD ?

Dell e-mail support:  Yes, we mean the key on the keyboard.

This is an actual exchange between myself and Dell today.  Like I mentioned above, they also told me to reinstall WinXP and then check it on an external monitor.

I replied that I would reinstall WinXP just as soon as I received that external monitor they must  be shipping me to check my monitor.

I was told I wasn't going to be receiving an external monitor from Dell.

Imagine that!

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 running XP Home Edition. I have recently started getting this problem too. Anyone know of a fix that will DEFINITELY work yet, or is Dell playing quiet on this??
