How to retrieve files from emergency.exe backup file?
I just spend several hours restoring my BF's pc after it got stuck in the startup repair loop. I had to use the recovery disks that I had made when the pc was new. I first tried the "save files" option, and saved that backup to a usb drive. But I wound up having to redo the recovery, as the startup repair loop problem returned. The next time I reinstalled, I opted to not save any files, and just resintally clean. I looked at the backup file that I had saved, and it is an .exe file. Is there any way to retrieve files from that emergency backup file?

MomWithNewPC,
Did you try double clicking on the exe file? If you saved the files and you're seeing what I think you are, double clicking on that will put the folders back. Check in Documents and pictures, after you double click on it.

Hi Rick.
Thanks. No, I did not, as I didn't want to risk it trying to reinstall the entire backup (programs and all) over top of what is now a successfully running system. Will it try to do that? I wouldn't want that. Also, I was concerned about any possible malware that might be there. Is it possible to extract (run the .exe) onto a different machine and scan the files there? Will the executable run, no matter where it is?

MomWithNewPC,
Create a system restore point. That way if things don't work, you can come back to what you have.
After the system restore point is created, double click on the backup.exe file. It should provide the files and folders that you requested to save.
You can also try Recuva to recover the files, select deep scan.
