Check the system specs in the Owner's Manual? The User Guides are in the Dell Support section, available through the links at the top of these forum pages.

I've checked the owner's manual. They do not list the chips down to this level.

There appears to be some kind of LPC-based controller chip, such as ones by SMsC, that is sensing the lid switch and several other system parameters. I am trying to find out what this chip is because it isn't obvious from the ACPI DSDT disassembly what is really happening when certain commands are sent -- and given the insane interaction between the lid switch, LCD backlight, and external monitor, I would like to see if there are some reasonable corrections to the DSDT that could make these work properly when running in console mode on Linux & FreeBSD.

It has been said in other messages, but it bears repeating that if Dell and the other PC manufacturers would provide correct ACPI info in the BIOS, knowing these specifics about the hardware wouldn't be necessary.
