Inspiron 1120 Keyboard not working in Windows

This must be a driver or configuration issue...

Fresh installation of Windows 7 x64 SP1.  Have run all Windows Updates, Intel Updates, and Dell Updates.  The keyboard works fine to get me into the CMOS and will get me to the Windows boot options screen (F8) for things such as Safe Mode.  Keyboard does not work in Safe Mode or Normal Mode.  BIOS version is the newest that Dell has posted (A01)

Reason that I say that is not a hardware issue.  I booted to DOS using an old Windows 98 SE disk from an external DVD drive.  At the DOS prompt, I have checked all the keys on the keyboard and all keys work under DOS.

Hi jfry,

Please check if there is a bang or yellow exclamation mark in device manager, follow the steps below.

To open the device manager click on Start > in search box type in device manager > in device manager page check if there is any yellow exclamation or bang mark.

The hard shows up fine, no exclamation mark -- there are no marks anywhere in the Device Manager.  It is the Standard PS/2 Keyboard running the Microsoft 6.1.7601.17514 driver.

Hi jfry,

Please uninstall the keyboard in device manager. Follow the steps below.

Start > in search box type in device manager > in device manager page under the keyboard > select the device right click on it and click on uninstall > you will get a popup window do not check that box click ok> restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

In addition update the chipset driver using the link below.

In this link punch in the system service tag or express service code select the appropriate operating system, under the chipset category select the chipset driver and install it and check if the issue persists.

I found a solution after trying your steps.  Your steps worked by did not fix the problem.

A user at another forum noted that the Inspiron 1120 keyboard is an 83 key keyboard and suggested that I try to change the driver to another keyboard with 83 keys.  I did so in the Device Manager, restarted the system and the keyboard works.
