I've now set it to 1280x800 and it looks ok

Does anyone know if this is the best resolution for this screen?

My friend must have the glossy screen with the different resolution options - I didn't get that upgrade.

I too have an Inspiron 1420 with Windows Vista Business. My problem is the brightness adjustment is not working when the laptop is running on battery. It works fine with power cord attached.... any idea?

Hi Carlaaclark,

Check the LCD type (Display) of your laptop and compare it with the optimum resolution mentioned below:

  • XGA — Extended Graphics Array (1024 x 768)
  • SXGA+ — Super Extended Graphics Array + (1400 x 1050)
  • UXGA — Ultra Extended Graphics Array (1600 x 1200)
  • WXGA — Wide Extended Graphics Array (1280 x 800)
  • WXGA+ — Wide Extended Graphics Array + (1440 x 900)
  • WSXGA+ — Wide Super Extended Graphics Array + (1680 x 1050)
  • WUXGA — Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array (1920 x 1200)

2 things you can do... either adjust the power settings or adjust the brightness manually.  Here's how:

1. Power Settings

Go to Start>Control Panel> Power Options>Adjust the display brightness

Change the settings under the battery column by moving the slide bar for the brightness all the way to the right.

2. Adjust Manually on the Fly

Hold down the the Fn key on bottom left of the keyboard, then use the up and down arrow keys on the right to adjust the brightness.  You will notice that the up and down arrows also have a sunshine icons indicating that the arrows are use to adjust the brightness.

For the poster who was disappointed with the brightness on battery power I found this solution on another thread.  Restart your computer and press F2 to go to the BIOS settings screen.  Arrow down to Video and enter.  Select "Brightness on battery" and change the default setting from "3" to "8".  Restart and now your display on battery power will be the same brightness as with the power cord connected.  You can still change the brightness with the Fn and arrow up and down keys if you want to reduce it to increase battery life.

Hope this helps!
