Inspiron 1420 will not start up

Hi everybody. I looked at several pages in this forum but did not see this particular problem. I have an (old) Inspiron 1420 that suddenly will not start up. I usually run it on AC adapter and shut it down each night. Today when I tried to boot up, nothing happens. Holding down the start button shows a constant amber battery light and a brief blue flash but no start. If I remove the battery and just use power cord, no lights at all. I'm using a good outlet. So I can't get the laptop to work. Looks like maybe a dead battery or faulty power cord. Anyone have this happen to them? Is there a way to tell whether the problem is the battery or the cord?

thanks for any insight.

Unplug the system from the adapter.  Plug the AC adapter into the wall - if the LED on the adapter (or DC side of the cord) never comes on, the adapter is bad.

If the adapter LED comes on, the adapter is likely OK.

Remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 seconds.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules.

Try powering up on AC only - if the system will, then try the the battery.  If it'll power up without but not with the battery, the battery is bad.

If the system still won't power up with a good adapter, chances are the mainboard is bad.

Thanks. The LED does not come on when adapter is plugged in. What is your opinion re: discount-priced power cord replacements? Is it better to go with OEM replacements?

Thanks again.

If you want the adapter to just power the system, a third-party one will do that.  If you want one that will charge the battery, you need an OEM adapter.
