Inspiron 1525 CPU upgrade
I currently have an Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3200 @ 2.00 GHz. How do I choose a processor upgrade that will be compatible?

OK, so anything below 800 MHz, but what is a socket P?
P.S. My motherboard model is Dell 0u990c.

This system uses a socket P CPU, 800 MHz bus max.

Socket P is the outgoing Core 2 CPU type. Of these, the 800 MHz units will work. The 1066 MHz units will not - nor will the newer Core i7 CPUs.

It doesn't make sense to go to a more expensive CPU - that will just shift the bottleneck to the video chip, which is relatively weak and cannot be upgraded on this model.

By "It doesn't make sense to go to a more expensive CPU", do you mean a more expensive one than my CURRENT one, or a more expensive one than the one SUGGESTED?

More than the one I suggested. You can easily double or triple that price, but it's not worth it for the system you've got.

That's what I was thinking, but thanks for clearing that up.
One more thing: I read that the laptop's BIOS and chipset must be able to handle the new processor. How do I find out if my current BIOS (which I just updated to the most recent version) and chipset will be able to handle it?

The 1525 can handle that CPU with no problem.

And so any CPU that's relatively close to that one's specs will also work, provided that it has 800 MHz, Socket P, and isn't an i7?
