Inspiron 17R N7110 Battery replacement

Most of the time, I use my laptop (Inspiron 17R N7110) plugged in.  I have noticed recently when I use it on battery power, the battery does not last very long.

Yesterday, I noticed a red "X" on the battery icon on the system tray.  The battery charges, but it says I should consider replacing the battery.  If I use the battery only, it is draining REALLY fast.

I have only had this computer a little over 2 years.  Seems a rather short time to have to buy a replacement battery -- especially at $149.99 from Dell.

Is it necessary to replace the battery?  Will anything damage the computer if I just use it plugged in?  Will it continue to run?  I have an Acer laptop that is at least 6 years old and I have never seen this message on it.  From doing a bit of research yesterday, there are several other people with the same laptop complaining about the same problem.

Thanks for any advice.

So you're saying I should replace it?  Would it have lasted longer if I ran the laptop off the battery instead of plugging it in all the time?

Hi Janet,

A battery is a consumable part and its life depends on its usage. Because of the battery gone bad in case of power failures your backup time will be less and sudden shutdown of your system might lead to operating system corruption, hard drive or system board going faulty.

Hi Janet,

Yes you can replace it if you are willing to. There are many steps which can save your battery. You can check this link for more information.
