Intel(r) 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller REINSTALLATION FIX (i8200 & i2650)

Hi everyone,

Just letting everyone know that I found a way to reinstall the original sound card drivers that were originally installed by Windows XP.  If you ever upgraded the drivers from Dell downloads and try uninstalling it, there's no way of gettting the older drivers back.  What happens is that the file wdma_int.inf in the c:\windows\inf\ hidden directory is deleted upon upgrading the newer drivers.  Go here for the appropriate fix.

John,

Is that the same thing as doing this:

Go to Start/Control Panel/System/ Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager. Go down to Sound, Video, and Game controllers and right click on SigmaTel. Choose properties. Go to the Driver tab and click on Update Driver. Choose "Install From List or specific location". Hit next and then choose "Don't Search, I will choose driver I want to install". You will get a list of Sigmatel drivers. Uncheck the box that says "show compatible hardware" Select Intel, and then select "Intel AC 97 Audio Controller". XP replaces the SigmaTel driver with the Intel AC97.

Or is the original driver you're talking about a different one?

Jim,

Yes!  That will work as well.  However, you mention Sigmatel... I believe you are running a newer model of the Inspiron/Latitude machines, so you might be unaffected with this "weirdness".

When you upgrade the sound drivers with the drivers located on Dell's download area, the original files are deleted and replaced by the set that you install.  I and many had tried it your way before writing up this post but did not find any appropriate drivers from Intel itself.  Searching on the forums and reading about the problems people have been having with their Inspiron 8200's and equvilent machines on trying to get back the older drivers after accidentally making the mistake of installing the newer drviers puts them into this kind of a mess.  I just wanted to help those people out for finding a solution to this once and for all.  (It is an old issue, but still around :) )

Thanks,
John
