No Sound Inspiron E1505

Please help:  I reloaded Window XP and have no sound.  However I do have sound with external speakers.  I have tried to download drivers which I'm not sure will resolve this problem, but nothing will show up in my Device Manager.  What am I doing wrong?

Under category AUDIO, click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.

The problem with using scripts is that they don't take into account the differences between models. There are several models that offer a Creative Audigy driver in the Audio category, and the E1505 is one of them. If the Audigy driver is installed before the Sigmatel audio driver is installed, then at best the audio will not work and at worst there will be changes in Windows which will make it impossible to have audio at all even after the Audigy driver is removed. A failed installation of the Audigy driver can cause Windows Audio Service to permanently shut down.

Also the script fails to note the correct order of installation. In XP the  Sigmatel driver will usually not install unless the Notebook System Software has been installed first, and then next the Intel Mobile Chipset software.

Hi Artistman,

The issue is with the internal speakers and we need to try few troubleshooting steps.

I recommend updating the Audio drivers on the computer.

I have provided a link for drivers download:

  1. Visit the following website: www.support.dell.com
  2. Enter the Service tag of the computer in the box provided and click “Submit”.
  3. In the next page, click drop down arrow to select the Operating System which is installed in the computer.
  4. Under category AUDIO, click “Download File” and save the file on desktop.
  5. Double click the file and follow the onscreen instructions.

If the issue still persists, run the diagnostics on the computer.

I have provided a link below to run diagnostics:

http://dell.to/NI55sF

From the above choose Diagnostic type as Symptom and select No Sound and start running the diagnostics.

Awaiting your response!

At the advice of a previous post I did the following:

I Downloaded and installed this:  Creative Lab Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD Audio Driver.  It did not appear in my Devise Manager

Sound and Audio Devise Properties is saying No Sound Devise
Devise Manager has these: Audio Codec, Legacy Audio Driver
A diagnostic on No Sound says this:
A diagnostic category was specified and the applicable device does not exist
Please advise how to proceed.

Hi Artistman,

Lets try few more troubleshooting steps.

Lets run hardware diagnostics on the computer. Power on the computer by holding FN and Power button simultaneously. Release the power button when you see the diagnostics running. Also, do you hear windows log in sound while booting into Windows?

Awaiting your response!

Note you are more likely to have the Sigmatel opposed to the Creative Labs SoundBlaster unless you customised your machine to have it.

Philip, it doesn't matter if the machine is customized or not. The Audigy driver needs to "see" the Sigmatel driver, so the Sigmatel must be installed first whether or not the laptop owner bought the optional Creative Labs software.

The Dell PC Diagnostics is not a self-contained diagnostic utility. It depends on the audio driver to be installed in order to work.
My advice is to use Windows System Restore and return to a date before you started installing drivers at random, then follow the advice from natakuc4 and install the correct drivers in the correct order. If you are unable to install the Sigmatel audio driver it may be due to damage caused by the Creative Labs Audigy driver, in which case I have some specific instructions that might fix it, or you might have to re-install XP.

Hi Jimco. Thanks for clarifying I wasn't sure if it was an actual soundcard or just additional software.

We followed all of the instructions that preceded this post a

This thread is kind of messed up so let me see if I understand you.

1. You have a new installation of XP SP3?

2. You installed the Dell Notebook System Software and restarted?
3. Installed the Intel Mobile Chipset driver and restarted?

$. Downloaded the Sigmatel driver, unzipped the files, but the installer would not run?

6. Did not try to install the Creative Labs audio software?

If all that is true, you might have audio hardware failure. Run the audio tests in Dell 32-bit Diagnostics if you have the resource (or utility) cd. I don't remember if Dell was still shipping it with the computers at the time of the E1505, if that is the model you have.

I was just off to bed so will look for your reply in the a.m.

Hello Jimco,

While we realize that this thread is over a year old we hope that perhaps someone will see this. We followed all of the instructions that preceded this post and the system still does not recognize the sound card and will not install the sigmatel driver. I have also made sure that the windows audio is active and set to automatic(checked it with the services.msc). We have reinstalled XP twice now and the second time is when we found this thread.

Thanks in advance for any replies
