Operation System Not Found

White letters on black background - Dell XPS L502X.  I am running the Windows 7 software that came installed on the computer.  I put it to sleep last night before I went to bed.  Woke up this morning and saw that the power light was on.  Opened the lid and found this message.

I have seen other posts where people say that they can hit Escape or Enter and continue.  This does not work for me.  I have no external devices connected to the computer.  I have validated the boot order.  I even get prompted to choose which device to boot from.  After choosing Hard Drive, I get the same error message.

At first I thought this was a virus since "Operation" System not found is not proper English.  Normally you would expect the error to be Operating System not found.

How do I determine if my HDD failed?  I saw posts about running hardware diagnostics.  The only thing that works is F2 and I don't see anything on those menus about running hardware diagnostics.  Must I find a bootable CD in order to get the computer up enough to run diagnostics?

And, if it is a HDD failure, what are my options?  I entered my Service Tag information and my computer is no longer in warranty.

Hi Krisa. You need to replace your hard drive it has failed (see here).

You can look for a 2.5" SATA laptop hard drive but likely you should go for a Solid State Drive. See www.crucial.com and scan your system (look at Solid State Drives). Here is their listing for your model.

You will need to reinstall the Operating System from scratch. See my wiki A Clean Install of Windows 7. You will need a Dell Reinstallation DVD or alternatively use the 25 digit product key on your COA with retail media and phone activation.

Press F12 at powerup -- you should see the diagnostic menu. Boot to that and run a test.  If you don't, go into the BIOS setup - if you don't see the hard drive listed, you'll need a replacement.

Okay... I did find the Diagnostics option on the F12 menu.  It is running now.
