PCM/CIA not recognized

My Inspiron 1300 notebook (purchased over a year ago) came with a PCM/CIA slot. I tried to use this slot for the first time yesterday, using a compact flash adapter (for a compact flash storage card from my digital camera). The computer does not recognize the new hardware. Also, I note that PCM/CIA is not listed in Device Manager.

Thanks for any insight.

Well, to save you a quick call to support.

Have you a friend or family member you can take this card to their laptop that has a pcmcia slot and plug it in to see if the card will be recognized on that system? If it isn't, then it's time to get a replacement for the card and/or call the card's tech support and see about getting an updated driver. Might be driver related or the card's hardware at fault.

Then there is always the good old tech support standby questions...

Have you updated your bios to the latest release?

Have you updated the chipset drivers to the latest release?

Have you tried resetting your bios to the factory default setting?

Have you attempted to boot the OS as a plain boot, if using windows, using F8 when it starts and loading only the basic windows w/no networking and etc?

Have you made sure your OS is patched with the latest OS patches?

Once you have exhausted each of those, you might end up calling Dell support. However, before you do - run a search for your dell laptop model and pcmcia card on the web to see if anyone else posted any similar problems.

...that's about all I got off the top of my head...

Thanks for the reply. That's the first thing I did: The compact flash card adapter works fine in the PCM/CIA slot on a friend's computer. My friend's XP Device Manager also lists the PCM/CI*A. My XP Dvise manager doesn't.

I use Window Automatic Update and should have the lastest updates for my XP OS. However, I don't know anything about bios and chipset drivers.

I tried to register for Dell's Hardware Chat Support. They weren't accepting new registrations "at this time."

Guess I'll do a search, as you suggested.

Since the card is recognized on another computer then the card is good. If I had to hazard a guess, it's probably the device driver for the card. Can you go to the manufacturers website and see about downloading any updated drivers? You should probably send their tech support an email about the problem and they should be able to give you better information on how to get it working correctly.
