Port Replicator / Advanced Port Replicator for Inspiron 7000

I've done my searches and I've done a bunch of reading - still can't seem to find the definative info...

Does anyone know which Port Replicator for my old Inspiron 7000?  Is/was there an APR?

I'm not looking for a USB replicator/hub.  I'm trying to figure out which Port Replicator/Docking Station was sold for the Inspiron 7000.  I've seen a couple around (eBay you know), I can't find any info on them on the Dell site.  I'm just not sure which is the correct model for the 7000.  My 7000 uses the PA-4 PS.

Port Replicator II ?
PRX ?
TSR9P ?

Thanks all,
Daz

DWJensen,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

There was only a pass-through port replicator available for the Inspiron 7000 (part# 5981E).

Thanks for the info Corey.  I can't seem to find any info on the 5981E (other than one for sale for $99 with no pictures or other info), but have found several 8943E's,3850E's, and 4286C's that state they are for the Inspiron 7000.  Do you have any info on the 8943E and/or the 3850E and/or 4286C - or any others that will work with the 7000?   TSR9C?

Basically I'm looking for a docking station to allow me to keep the 7000 closed and use an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse just like I do with my Inspiron 8200.  The 7000 is my garage computer so I'm trying to keep it clean by not having it open all the time.

Any help here?

Thanks,

Daz

Also - I'm not really clear on what a "pass-through" port replicator is.  How is that different than others - no Networking?

OK, now I'm really confused...:smileysad:

I've spent a bunch more time searching and reading through old posts/threads here (search works better when you use the right box...)  I now wonder if Dell doesn't change part/item numbers from time to time.

My searches turned up several posts from Dell Moderators (generally in response to questions such as "which PR for i7000?" with responses stating that the correct Port Replicator for the Inspiron 7000 is/are the:

  • 7368C - posted by Dell-Brian in '99
  • Port Replicator II (8943E?) - posted by Dell-Suzanne in '01
  • 3850E - posted by Dell-Rollie in '02
  • 5981E - posted by Dell-Cynthia in '99 and Dell-Corey above

Any others?  Any suggestions, comments, anything?

I have found 8943E's and 3850E's currently available for sale - just trying to make sure which will (or won't) work with my 7000.

Thanks again...

Daz

dwjensen,

The part# I gave you is the current part that we would give for an Inspiron7000.

DWJensen,

8943E is a label for an old part, it is not a docking station to my knowledge.

For the benefit of future searchers...

After doing multiple searches and reading through this and a few other forums, I decided to take the plunge and try one of the #8943E Port Replicators that I had found on eBay.

I ended up buying a "New in the Box" Dell Inspiron Port Replicator II (Dell p/n #8943E).  The Port Replicator came sealed in the original Dell box and included the AC adapter (PA-4) and manual ("Dell Inspiron 7000 Port Replicator User's Guide").  Everything works perfectly.

So - I can now say with good authority that Dell p/n #8943E is a Port Replicator/Docking Station  and it is for the Inspiron 7000 and it does work as it is supposed to.

The only thing is that that part# is not a current one for Dell…it has been replaced…so you may find it used or one ebay or something but not from Dell.
