I noticed the speakers were set to Stereo, i tried setting it to 5.1 surround

It should be left on "Stereo" unless you have a 5.1 speaker system connected to the laptop. To use 5.1 surround you need  3 pairs of speakers. Each pair will have a plug that plugs into one of the 3 audio ports on the left side of your laptop. Then when you change the setting from stereo to 5.1, those 3 audio ports get re-configured to output 6 channels (5.1) of audio to the 6 speakers. If you are just using the laptop's internal speakers then leave it set to stereo.

I forgot to mention, there is a section on this forum for Alienware owners called the Alienware Club, where the participants have more specific knowledge about Alienware models than we might have here. The Alienware Club also has many FAQs for their models. Here is one that might interest you. It explains how to set up your sound card to emulate surround sound in games when using stereo speakers.

Hi Hisyam,

You should try re-installing the audio drivers on the system. Also, if possible connect a different set of speaker or check the same speakers on a different system to isolate the issue.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks and Regards

From my own personal experience, you should re-install your audio drivers weekly.  That is what is required for this particular model.

Of course, this is also the only computer I have ever needed to do this with.  Dell has not figured out what the problem is with this model.

I'm having a similar problem. I have installed and re-installed all the new audio drivers for my computer. I have also looked for any new updates for any other drivers that may be causing this problem. My external speakers will not make any sound whatsoever when they should be (IE playing a game or watching a video). I have hooked speakers up into the audio out ports and they work fine. I can also get sound through my USB headset. I haven't moved the computer at all so I don't see how they could have possibly just broken, especially when they weren't in use. I have had nothing but problems with this computer since day one and I'm starting to get a little fed up with this. Did I just get a defective unit or is there some sort of fix for this kind of thing?

a similar problem.

Hello. The problem is similar to original poster's issue -- the speakers crackle when configured for 5.1?

This part is difficult to understand:

My external speakers will not make any sound whatsoever when they should be... I have hooked speakers up into the audio out ports and they work fine.

I don't understand. How are the external speakers hooked up when they fail to have sound? Are they Bluetooth?

Why is Dell not taking responsibility for this common issue?  This computer is expensive and to have this significant piece of hardware be an issue is unfathomable.

We have done a BIOS and driver update. Downloaded updated codecs and still nothing. Dell wants us to pay $160.00 just for them to come and check the laptop out. Thats inhumane.
