On such an old laptop, it doesn't make sense to buy a $100+ battery IF you don't need the mobility and use it mostly as a desktop replacement. Try removing the battery and test the adapter alone. If that works, use it with the battery removed until you can buy a new laptop. Computers with the new Windows 10 should be out later this year.

I don't advise buying any dell computer parts on Ebay or other sites. Dell computers are fussy about batteries. Genuine Dell replacement batteries should be used-- but on an old laptop, it is a waste of money now that laptops and tablets can be bought at good prices.

You can obtain good quality third party batteries on Amazon or eBay for a fraction of the cost from Dell. Some offer three year warranties. Quality can vary from excellent to just OK. However, for $20 for a 9-cell battery, you really can't go wrong.
