Share printer attached to Windows-XP computer with wireless Vista-Computer

I have an HP deskjet 5550 printer attached to a DESKTOP computer running Windows-XP. I also have a Dell XPS LAPTOP computer that communicates with the DESKTOP computer via a wireless network. I wish to share the printer so that the XPS LAPTOP can print. I have jumped thru a lot of hoops already with no success. I tried following the directions provided in a Microsoft website:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx#EFAA.
Things I have already done are:
1) Set up the home sharing network so that computers can share files. Both computer have the same network name.  That works.
2) Added the printer to XPS LAPTOP's printer window. This required running the "Add a Printer" wizard on the XPS LAPTOP to find the printer. I beleive this installed the printer driver on the XPS LAPTOP.
3) Checked the HP website to see if it has a more recent Vista compatible driver.  It said that the driver installed by Vista was the correct one and no further update required.
4) I tried making the Vista sharing network public and also private. Neither worked
5) I tried making the Vista sharing network password protected and not password protected. Neither worked.
6) I tried, on the DESKTOP computer, setting the printer to "spool" and also to "print directly to the printer".  Neither worked.

It may be worth noting that I have third Dell insperion laptop that also communicates via the wireless network and it continues to share the printer just fine.

What Have I missed???

Have you enabled printer sharing on the vista machine?..

No, I have not enabled Printer sharing on the Vista Computer. The "Network and Sharing Center" dialog box that shows this status has printer sharing OFF, and the checkboxes to enable it are grayed out with a comment "There are no printers connected to this computer". I believe this implies that the share printer status cannot be set to ON unless there is a printer attached to the Vista computer.  My printer is attached to the Desktop-XP computer, not to the Vista computer.
