When you run your test how soon do you have the screen saver coming on? Sometimes a screen saver will for some reason keep it from sleeping. Usually windows logo one doesn't. But I would try having no screen saver or a differnet one and with no sound. But you could have power savings mode set to sleep much sooner if you go with no screen saver. Also, under power options do you have the power schemes set to Portable/laptop?

Thanks for the reply. I don't think it's the screen saver. I ran a test where the screen saver came on after 1 minute, sleep after 3 minutes and hibernate after 5 minutes. All worked fine.

After some more sleuthing and reading other articles I'm wondering if there isn't something else that runs in the background periodically that Windows considers activity. It runs often enough to make the sleep/hibenate thing not work on the 2 hour/4 hour schedule but not so often that it interferes with my short tests. Maybe something like anti-virus (Norton) looking for updates or something like that.

Regarding the power setting on "laptop", it's not. I started with laptop but made a new power scheme from it and saved it under a new name. My understanding is that is just the name of the scheme and doesn't pertain to laptops only per se. Correct?

Thanks for the input. I'll guess I'll keep searching and reading.

Yes, could also be hard drive activity from a background program also. It may be going to sleep when you aren't looking but my concern mostly if it is asleep that means the HD is like running only at 20% or so and may not can run the program. I am not sure that it matters if it is on portable/laptop so much as if it is set to like always on. Have you checked any programs like Norton to see how often updates are scheduled to run and also windows updates. Even Adobe Reader 7.0 will try to do automatic updates. You could close those programs one test them one at a time and might find the one causing it. I think you will find the culprit after some testing.

I'll slowly pick away at it. Good thing it's just one of those minor things. If it works, good. If it doesn't, that's okay, too.

Thanks for your input.

If you have windows doing automatic updates, Norton, or any program the task scheduler will be running in systray. Over the years I have found task scheduler to cause problems in one way or another. What I have done to avoid it is to remove all items in the task scheduler and select the option to stop using it. Then set windows update to notify me when updates are available and do them when I am ready to. I use CA internet security suite and it updates just fine without using task scheduler. But you will find the problem I'm sure and good luck. Not sure my input was helpful but you are welcome if so.

A little update for those interested...

A couple of days ago we switched from Norton Internet Security 2006 to Norton Internet Security 2007. For the last two days our hibernating has been working just fine. Might have the solution here.

Cheers.
