USB Module NEC Floppy Drive not recognized by Windows XP Pro SP1 - Inspiron 8500

Inspiron 8500, refurbished about 1 year ago by Dell, will not recognize the USB Module Storage (NEC Floppy Drive). I have done SFC /SCANNOW, but still no floppy disk recognized. The floppy disk drive is readily recognized in a friend's computer running the same OS. Any ideas what could be causing this???
