Use NVIDIA Drivers instead of Dell? (Dell's are outdated)
Hi everyone, I have a question. I have a Studio XPS 13, and the current driver on the download page for my NVIDIA 9400M G is 8.15.11.8633. Here's the link:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=&SystemID=STUDIOXPS13
This is an outdated driver, the most recent driver on the NVIDIA site is 8.17.11.9562. I was wondering if I can update to the driver on th NVIDIA site, or I need the outdated Dell driver for my computer so it works. Will the driver on the NVIDIA site cause hardware problems? If you need any more info, let me know. Thanks in advance!

Alrighty after a few days I've had no problems with the new driver, 195.81, a beta. It seemed better than the other one. Turns out drivers on the NVIDIA site are compatible with the Studio XPS 13. Thread closed. Thanks!

Hello!.. To answer your question, yes and no.. If the card is intigrated, then you have a good chance that the new drivers will work without issues. Sometimes with intigrated drivers the OEM requests of the chip company to tweak their cards to this or that and then the card drivers will not be optimized for your product. If the card is an add on card then generally they will work without issue.
All I would do is give it a shot .. 9 times out of 10 the drivers will not install and tell you why if there is a problem. There is also the saying of 'if its not broke, dont fix it' that you should consider too. Its possible the new drivers wont enhance or fix anything at all too.

The 195.62 drivers on the Nvidia site will work fine. Nvidia has decided to support laptops with drivers for most laptops. They just started this several months ago. Unless you are a big time gamer or have a video problem, there is no reason to update video drivers every time a new one comes out.

Alright thanks everyone. The reason I want to update is because on the NVIDIA site it says improved performance in Need for Speed: Shift. I own this game which is why I want to update. I'll give it a try and post if I have any problems. Thanks!
