Using Canon A75 Digital Camera with Inspiron 5100

I purchased a new Canon A75 digital camera (from Dell) and can not get my laptop (5100) to connect.  I've loaded the software which came with the camera but it still will not connect.  I've loaded it on my desktop which is running Windows 98 and it works fine.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why it will not function with the Inspiron?

I have not looked to see if the flash memory seen in the explorer.  I am downloading directly from the camera and not sure if Explorer can directly see the flash memory.  I know that the the USB port is functional because I use both for a jump drive, an external mouse and a USB 3.5 floppy drive.

the camera's flash memory should be seen as a removable drive with a drive letter in explorer if it's detected.
