Video driver install Inspiron 6000

Question

Video driver install Inspiron 6000 Configuring a brand new Inspiron 6000 and running into trouble with video driver install. The Inspiron came with Windows XP Home installed and we use Windows 2000 in our office so I installed Windows 2000 from the CD, then I installed all of the windows updates available (like I do every time we get a new PC or laptop) and of course, now I need to reinstall all of the drivers. I have downloaded all of the required files from DELL's website and installed them with no problem except when I attempted to install the video driver. I get the following error every time: 'This system does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Setup will exit.' The drivers is an Intel Graphics Video Driver, Vers. 6.14.10.3929. The video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon X300 so I also tried to install the video driver offered for that and I get this error: 'INF error. Video driver not found Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.' Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm completely stumped at this point.

From what's available from Dell, there are no drivers for the ATI card for Windows 2000, only XP. The Intel drivers won't work since you don't have the Intel adapter. Unless you can find drivers for the ATI card for Windows 2000 (perhaps from the ATI website) I don't think you'll be able to use that laptop properly with Windows 2000. The computer will still work but without proper drivers you'll get poor performance from it.

You have a few options to choose from...

You can download an older ATi Mobility Radeon X300 driver from Dell ("click here" - release date: 8/1/2005)...

Or download an optimized (for IQ & stability) Omega ATi Catalyst 7.1 driver (modified to include Radeon Mobility support) that many gamers prefer... ("click here" and the driver download is "here" - release date: Jan 14, 2007).

DriverHeaven has a "DH Mod tool" ("click here") that "I believe" should work for Win2k, also. It can modify the latest "Desktop" ATi Catalyst drivers to install on your laptop...

Hi Rod, The older version of 'ATi Mobility Radeon X300' installation failed with the following error: 'Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running the setup.' However, the 'Radeon Omega Drivers 3.8.330 (Catalyst 7.1)' did the trick. I downloaded the Omega driver from 'http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php'. After the installation, I restarted the laptop. Now the screen looks great. Thanks a lot, Regards, Samy
