XPS L501x: Charger not accepted

My XPS L501x does not accept the 130W charger from Dell.

The original charger (90W) was broken, so I bought a new 130W charger (Art-Nr. 450-12071).

With this 130W charger connected, the BIOS says "Unknow device installed".

When I use an old 60W charger (Inspiron 6000) then the BIOS says something about a "60W AC ..."

I have already installed the current BIOS version A08 !

So, what can I do to repair my system. The L501x will not not recharge the battery with any of the chargers.

Thanks

Possible good news:

www.dell.de / Privatanwender / Support / Services / Dell Service Überblick / Kontakt On some pages of the Dell Website I found a link for a callback-servcie. This service is very helpfully and seems to have technical background.

After half an hour of a free phone call I will get a replacement of the AC adapter. The technical service told me that the AC adapter would be broken.

Now I am awaiting the new AC adapter.

Greetings

Hello Widi2000,

XPS L501x supports 90w/130w ac adapter. Since it is not detecting any of them, it can be a motherboard issue. I would request you to connect the original ac adapter which was shipped with the computer and try the following steps which would help us in isolating the issue.

1. Releasing the flea power.
-- Disconnect all the peripherals from the computer including the battery and the ac adapter and release the flea power by pressing and holding the power button for 5 to 10 seconds and check.

2. Check the status of the Ac adapter in BIOS.
-- Restart the computer.
-- Keep tapping F2 key on the Dell logo screen.
-- Check the status of Ac adapter and let me know, would help you with next course of action.

Also refer the article on AC Adapter not recognized. Please try the steps and write back, would be glad to assist you further.

I believe, I have checked all you have suggested:

  • Releasing the flea power and restarting the computer: results to the same state "Unknow device installed" with the new 130W charger and "65W AC adapter" with the old charger (Inspiron 6000)
  • The light of the 130W adapter is on and does not change when I plug it to the computer.
  • The original AC adapter (90W) does not work anymore. If I plug it into the computer the blue light at the plug dims down to the half of the brightness. The BIOS says: no adapter installed.
  • I have disconnected the charger from the computer and the wall,
  • was waiting until the light was off and a little bit more,
  • have removed the battery and any connection, have pressed the power button,
  • and have reconnected first the wall plug then the computer

But the issue still appears.

Thanks

Replace the power jack inside the system.

Hello ejn63,

now, I am back. I needed some time to order a power jack and to replace it in system.

Now, that is done - but the power adapter is still not accepted.

I did some more tests with my 12V car adapter and got the following results:

  • Brought my laptop to my car, plugged all together and switched on my system
    • BIOS said:  AC adapter: 90W   :emotion-1:
  • Pulled the power connector at the computer
    • BIOS said:  AC adapter: None  :emotion-1:
  • Plugged back the connector to the computer
    • BIOS said:  AC adapter: None  :emotion-42::emotion-6:
  • Reboot of the computer - but did not change the power adapter
    • BIOS said:  AC adapter: None  :emotion-42::emotion-6:
  • Now I did the following steps:
    • Shutdown of the computer
    • Unplug the power adapter from computer and from the 12V connector
    • First, replug the power connector at the laptop
    • Then, replug the 12V connector at my car
    • Now start the computer and
    • BIOS said:   AC adapter: 90W  :emotion-1:

That was fine, and I tried the same procedure with my AC adapter to connect the power supply in my house.

  • BIOS said:   AC adapter: Unknow device installed

Thus, I believe the issue must be anywhere else because

  • the power jack of my computer works well - otherwise my car adapter should not be recognized
  • the BIOS messages are different - thus the AC adapter is recognized but not accepted as a valid power supply.

Any idea ?

Thanks

The new ac adapter has arrived and works now about an hour.

Let's see how long it works. The last power supply has first also still works.
